Letter to the White Church

To the White Church

Yes, I believe the gospel is the only solution to the malice that invades the human heart. I believe that the blood of Jesus is strong enough to drench even the most racist of human hearts. I believe that Jesus’ broken body on Calvary covers a multitude of sins. All of humanity, in one fells swoop, was given the opportunity and repent, believe and be saved.

Yet, whiteness (as an ideology) must be dismantled.

White supremacy must be dismantled.

The privilege that exists between you and me must be dismantled.

The supremacy of Eurocentric/German theology in academia must be dismantled.

The supremacy and racial bias in the white church must be dismantled.

Whiteness (the leading disease of racial prejudice) must be named, cast down and replaced with the true ethic of Imago DeƬ.

Each of us represents the glory of God EQUALLY and without discrimination. Therefore anything that reeks of white supremacy (implicitly and explicitly) must be dismantled and the true gospel of Christ must be upheld.

No, it is not enough to ‘go back’ to our ‘old ways’.

No, it is not enough to reminisce the way ‘our country use to be’.

No, it is not enough to ‘Make America Great Again’ when, outside of forcing 12.5 million people into slavery, we terrorized, lynched and killed black men and women for simply existing.

No, it is not enough to no longer talk about racism (as if talking about racism is worse than racism itself).

No, it is not enough to merely talk about the spiritual truth that every person has sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

No, it is not enough to forgive my oppressor and hope that eventually time will sort out the brutality of racism.

No, it is not enough to come together and pray that Jesus will eventually turn the heart of a nation with no use of my own hands.

No, it is not enough to show the other cheek and not ask my abuser, “What gives you the right to hit me?”

No, it is not enough to sing with me at a conference and not address the areas of supremacy and privilege in your own life.

Yes, the time is now for the gospel to be fully activated in our nation.

Yes, the time is now for the white church to no longer stare apathetically at the injustices of which it is complicit.

Yes, the time is now for power and privilege to be used for the good of humanity as Jesus used his (Philippians 2).

Yes, the time is now for the white church to see its complicity in slavery, segregation, Jim Crow and in the racial animus that exist unto today.

If the words that I have written here cause you to be outraged.

If the words that I have written here cause you to be uncomfortable.

If the words I have written here cause you to question my faith, astuteness, love for Christ, love for the the church, my patriotism or accuracy of my theology, I have one thing to say:

I wrote this for you.

What is 'White Supremacy'?

The events in Charlottesville, Virginia were tragic as a domestic terrorist group sought to incite violence and instill fear into the hearts of all non-whites on August 12th, 2017. If 2017 has taught us anything, it is that many members of the white majority have displayed a learning deficiency in regards to the actual black experience, the actual historical degradation and the actual suppressive ideology of white supremacy (beyond the factions of 'white supremacists' who appear on our television screens). The reason I have labeled white ignorance as a 'learning deficiency' is because I have found that many whites are simply unable to empathize with the black experience and much of this is ignorance is because their realm of existence is so distinctively different than that of black Americans. When someone is diagnosed as having a learning deficiency it is sometimes due the inability of the brain to receive or process information. Many blacks have found that when exp...

The Reoccuring Cycle of Racism. Christian's Responsibility.

The Three-Fifths Compromise may no longer prohibit African-Americans to have a full voting right in America by claiming we are only three-fifths of a person. But in light of events surrounds the murders, assaults, and incarceration of African-Americans at the hands of citizens and government officials it seems that we still, perhaps, are only worth 3/5 of the appropriate response of our fellow American citizens. For example there are still roads in South Carolina that are named after confederate militants who fought to keep black people enslaved. In the south there are still churches who have existed since the 1800's who have yet to allow African-Americans to congregate let alone assume leadership positions in their churches. When I hear people say that Dylan Roof's actions were an isolated occurrence of a mentally-ill man and that his actions do not suggest that there is a deeper undertone of racial bigotry in this country (even though he himself said he wanted to start a race...

Do Black Lives Matter to Jesus?

As black people, we have gone through 400 hundred years of pain and suffering that is unlike anything else in human history.  We have been taken from our land, beaten and chained. We were forced into slavery by people who called themselves Christians.  For 246 years our women were raped by white men because they could be. For 246 years our men were killed by white men if they fought for their humanity. For 246 years our children were born into a world that viewed them as commodities and then stripped from their parents as soon as they were of working age.  After the emancipation in 1865, our people were forced into violent segregation while white Christians rode around on horses dragging burned black bodies by a rope.  In 1921, our haven, Greenwood, Oklahoma, was burned down because of white jealousy and 300 of our people were killed for thriving.  In 1954, a 14 year-old Emmitt Till was wrongfully accused of whistling at a white women and because of...
